Warehouse Mezzanines in Kansas City
Unused height above Kansas City warehouse floors becomes working space with mezzanines. A steel mezzanine turns empty height into working floor, and for many Kansas City operations it beats signing a new lease.

Mezzanines Add Floor Space Without a Move in Kansas City
Relocating from Raytown to Lee's Summit, or from Shawnee to Edgerton, means downtime, new equipment and staff disruption. A mezzanine keeps the operation where it is and doubles the usable area underneath it.
Packing lines, returns processing, light parts storage and e-commerce pick zones all work well on an upper deck.
Choosing Between Types of Mezzanines
The building, the load and how people use the space decide which structure fits.
Structural Steel Mezzanines
Columns and beams stand independently and support a deck of steel, bar grating or panel flooring. Best for open work platforms, office storage and wide spans with few posts.
Rack-Supported Decks
Pallet rack frames carry the walkway or deck. Common in fulfillment buildings that want storage and picking in one structure.
Multi-Level Pick Modules
Two or three picking floors stacked inside tall buildings, often fed by carton flow rack and conveyor. 3PLs at LPKC, CenterPoint and KCI Intermodal BusinessCentre use them to pack many SKUs into a small footprint.
How Building Height Shapes Mezzanines
Tilt-wall buildings at 32 to 40 ft clear in southern Johnson County and Belton can hold two or three working levels. Older 18 to 24 ft buildings in the Fairfax Industrial District, the West Bottoms and Independence usually support a single deck with good headroom above and below.
Underground parks like SubTropolis have roughly 16 ft ceilings between rock pillars. A low deck there can still pay off for light storage, and pillar spacing sets column placement.
Storage Above Offices
A popular approach puts a deck over modular offices. The office gets a solid roof, and the area above stores records, seasonal stock or spare parts.
Put industrial shelving on the upper floor for small items, or close off part of it with wire partitions for valuable inventory.
Access and Edge Protection
Every deck needs stairs, railing and a safe way to load material.
We specify stairs with handrails, guardrail with kick plates around open edges, and pallet gates at loading points. Up-and-over gates keep a barrier in place while forklifts set pallets on the deck, which is why busy fulfillment buildings favor them. Swing and sliding gates suit lighter traffic.

Season and Site Planning
Steel and decking arrive by truck, and spring storm and tornado season can disrupt deliveries. Summer crews start early in hot, humid unconditioned buildings, and winter installs plan around the cold.
Underground space stays at 65 to 72 degrees, which keeps install conditions steady in any month, though deliveries still depend on surface weather.
Drawing the Mezzanine Into the Full Layout
Columns under a deck affect where pallet racking rows and forklift lanes can run, so everything gets planned together.
Warehouse Equipment & Supplies Co. has supplied and installed warehouse equipment since 1997, and one project with us can cover racking, offices, mezzanines, shelving and partitions.
Before quoting, we ask what goes on the deck, how it gets there and how many people work up there at once. Those answers set capacity, stair count and gate location. See deck types on our national mezzanines page or visit the Kansas City overview.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a mezzanine cheaper than moving to a bigger Kansas City warehouse?
Often, yes. It avoids relocation downtime and new equipment, though it depends on the space you need and your clear height.
Can a mezzanine fit in underground space like SubTropolis?
A low deck can work for light storage. We plan columns around the rock pillars and the roughly 16 ft ceiling.
How many levels fit in a 36 ft clear building at LPKC?
Often two or three working levels, depending on obstructions overhead and the product stored.
Which pallet gate should we use?
Up-and-over gates for frequent forklift loading, since a barrier always stays in place.
