Unused height in Houston warehouses gives mezzanines room to add working floor space. A steel mezzanine claims that unused height for packing lines, storage and picking, often for far less than the cost and disruption of moving into a bigger building.

Mezzanines for Pick Modules in Houston’s Katy and Cypress Areas

Fulfillment buildings off I-10 West in Katy and along US-290 through Cypress mostly run 32 to 40 ft clear. That height supports two or three stacked picking floors.

Each level carries carton flow rack or industrial shelving, with conveyor carrying totes down to pack-out. The footprint stays small while pick faces multiply.

Choosing the Structure for Mezzanines

Two main approaches cover almost every Houston project.

Mezzanines for Packaging and Overflow Near the Port

Transload and 3PL buildings in Pasadena and La Porte along SH-225 and SH-146 handle constant container flow from Bayport and Barbours Cut. Floor space near the dock fills fast.

A platform over the dock area holds empty pallets, packaging and returns, freeing the floor below for staging import loads. Resin and petrochemical packagers around TGS Cedar Port in Baytown use similar decks for bags, liners and labels.

Storage Above In-Plant Offices

Many projects place a deck directly over modular offices. The office gets a solid ceiling, and the space above becomes a home for records and spare parts.

Part of the deck can be closed off with wire partitions for items that need limited access.

Stairs, Gates and Guardrail

Access and edge protection are part of every deck. We specify stairs with handrails, guardrail with kick plates around open edges, and pallet gates where forklifts set loads.

Up-and-over gates keep a barrier in place at all times, which is why high-traffic decks favor them. Swing or sliding gates work for lighter use.

Older Buildings in Stafford and Sugar Land

Buildings along I-69 in Stafford and Sugar Land, and many inside Beltway 8, run 18 to 28 ft clear. A single deck usually fits, with workable headroom on both levels.

Lights, joists and ductwork overhead set the usable height, and we plan deck elevation around them. Columns under the deck are placed to keep forklift lanes and pallet racking rows clear.

Deck Surfaces and Loads

Deck choice follows the work. Bar grating lets light and air pass through, which helps in hot, humid buildings. Solid steel or panel decking suits carts, rolling equipment and small parts that could fall through grating.

We ask what goes on the deck, how it gets up there and how many people work on it at once. Those answers set capacity, stair count and gate locations before any steel is ordered.

Conveyor drops, lighting under the deck and electrical for pack stations are easier to plan from the start than to add later.

Growth matters too. A deck sized with some room to spare can take a second phase of shelving or a pick line later without new steel.

Before steel arrives, we walk the building with you to mark column locations, stair landings and gate positions on the floor. That walk-through catches conflicts with dock traffic, conveyor paths and rack rows while changes are still easy and cheap to make on paper.

Weather and Install Timing

Most Houston warehouses are not air-conditioned. Summer heat and humidity shape crew hours, so steel goes up early in the day.

Hurricane season from June through November can delay steel deliveries and close the port for days. We keep schedules flexible and confirm materials before mobilizing.
