Start with the items, not the units. Measure the largest carton and the heaviest bin you plan to store, then count how many pick faces each SKU needs.

From there we set shelf depth, span and vertical spacing. A unit that is too deep wastes reach; one that is too shallow forces cartons to hang over the aisle.

Aisle width matters too. Order pickers with carts need more room than a single person carrying a tote, and cross-aisles every so often keep walk paths short in long rows.

Growing Without Starting Over
